New gig with SJ and His Boss Combo

Lorenzo (Surfer Joe) has entered the beach music scene in 1994 playing in a few local bands in Livorno, Italy. Switching between Italian music and Californian classics he soon found out his own direction towards surf and beach music by discovering Dick Dale, Jan & dean, Beach Boys, Astronauts, Challengers, Centurians, Ventures, Surfaris, Belairs, Lively Ones, Chantays, Pyramids, Trashmen and so on. Fortunately the local music scene was pretty active in the mid 90s even if there was very little space for original music.

On 1997 Lorenzo formed the Pipelines that soon become a premier Beach Boys & California music band in Europe playing more than 1000 shows during the next 10 years! The contacts with other surf bands have been very frequent sharing the stage with friends like Bradipos IV, Crashmen, Charades, Los Venturas, Cosmonauti, Wet-Tones and more.While the Pipelines were still very healthy, on April 2002 Lorenzo launched SurferJoe.it, a web portal to promote the Italian surf music scene, which truly started his business as booker and event manager. Since then many events have been organized in the name of Surfer Joe Music including 5 edition of the Summer Festival, now acclaimed as the world's #1 surf music event (www.surferjoemusic.com).On 2003 Lorenzo formed an instrumental surf band called the Speedsurfers, a very nice combo mostly dedicated to original compositions with a few classics in the set list. Speedsurfers did just a few shows with a good local success, but on 2004 Lorenzo left Italy and moved to Antigua, in the Caribbean.On 2005 Lorenzo formed the Wadadli Riders with his wife Niki on bass. The band was the very first surf band ever born in the Caribbean and during the next 5 years the Riders have been touring Antigua, Europe and the US quite successfully with Lorenzo switching between drums and guitar.Today Surfer Joe is a strong reality in the surf music community worldwide and Lorenzo is continuing writing and producing his own instrumental music. In contact with almost any surf band on the planet, Surfer Joe wants to diffuse this fabulous music genre with its simplicity, strength and incredible energy!The band members definitely reflect a new attitude in the Surfer Joe's band. A bit more aggressive towards a Dick Dale styled sound, reading the Wadadli Riders' songs under a brand new light. Tommaso "Tommi" and Francesco "Togno" both come from punk & hardcore bringing in huge power and energy. This will not mean a complete change as the leading philosophy firmly remains surf music and its typical features. It will probably mean raising the volume... but that's ok! Luca on rhythm and organ will also give the chance to try new sounds in combination with the Fender Jaguar. You will have to come and see the show.

"L'estate sta finendo" - Various artists

"E anche quest'anno L'estate sta finendo. Non si sa se è un bene o no, ma per noi di A/v è una buona scusa per mettere insieme quaranta gruppi e portare alle vostre orecchie altrettanti brani.

Un ciddì dannatamente rumoroso, questo primo ciddì. Si parte coi Butcher Mind Collapse e la loro the forgetter, un lento/veloce avanzare a due voci, post-hardcore con sprazzi d'elettronica tra Blood Brothers e pAper chAse; si passa poi ai Mombu, neonato incontro tra Luca Mai (Zu) e Antonio Zitarelli (Neo), una sorta di danza africana che incontra il noise e il death metal, solo con l'uso di sax e batteria; la terza traccia, opera dei pugliesi Bokassà, vede i Don Caballero a caccia di elefanti, tra math, danze tropicali e rumore; i Common Deflection Problems, cervelli partenopei in fuga a Londra, ci regalano l'inedito kasbah a cavallo tra math e noise; la siciliana PepiBand porta a spasso un bipedestop'n'go-dipendente; l'accordo iniziale, poi, di the ship di The Mantra Above the Spotless Melt Moon ferma il rumore fatto finora, portandoci su binari post-rock per voce femminile; e su binari post (anche se più figlio di gruppi come65daysofstatic) ci rimaniamo anche con darfur, secondo inedito, questa volta dei Death of Emily Dickinson; e tralasciando le voci e le distorsioni, teniamo solo l'elettronica del gruppo precedente trovandoci così ad ascoltare retour à alphaville di Fucksia, terzo inedito, una sorta di intermezzo che introduce alla parte elettronica; ed elettronica è, tra new wave e drum'n'bass, na deiDelay_House, come una classe dell'asilo che coverizza i Detonazione; e immaginate questa classe dell'asilo, dopo quasi vent'anni: è così che suona beetwin mountain degli Everybody Tesla tra mille Animal Collectiv-osità; restando sempre sull'elettronica, sconfinando però nel funk, troviamo bigfoot deiTubax, una colonna sonora per un poliziesco suonata su vecchi commodore 64; ricompare il rumore coi The Bad Mexican, nu-prog dal retrogusto sud americano per maiali e feedback; rumorosa poi, lo è di certo lsd soundsister del duoSchillaci/Lagomasino, no wave basso e batteria, quattro minuti abbondanti d'anarchia; gli Astolfo Sulla Luna, ci portano sulla luna davvero, dove iMassimo Volume incontrano i Disciplinatha; e poi una nostra vecchia conoscenza, i ciociari Bandwidth, con una manciata di rumorosi secondi "...against Gheddafi". Per La Chanson De Roland l'incontro è tra Jesus Lizard eShellac, per un buon noise-rock live in sala prove; i Supergonzo, con pochi secondi, scatenano un terremoto con l'epicentro nelle vostre orecchie; con i So.Loancora gli Shellac, tra decine di stop'n'go e una flotta volante di mosche pronta a divorarti; coi Poptones, ancora rumore, ancora ciociaria così come i colleghi d'etichetta Bandwidth; mentre i Kelvin, con il loro house-noise, portano in scena i synth; e il finale post-burlesque, tra synth e due voci, dei Blown Paper Bags conclude degnamente (appena) il primo cd.

Forse non è proprio vero che l'estate sta finendo, o almeno, non è che deve per forza finire. È questo che potrebbe far pensare la prima traccia: highwave stardegli Ava Kant, un pò di sano surf da apprezzare già solo per il titolo; i Shelly Johnson Broke My Heart ci offrono del buon punk-rock dalla voce femminile, a metà tra Sleater-Kinney e Splendora; e se poi immaginate un gruppo shoegaze che si diverte a fare punk'n'roll dal retrogusto new-wavesco, otterretehope for youth dei Culture Wars; i Cartavetro, in tre, da Genova, rimangono sempre sul post-punk dal retrogusto new wave; e ancora new wave con gli At The Weekend, tra Duran Duran e The Killers. Il primo inedito del secondo ciddì è opera dei Teenage Riot, sette minuti ad altalenare tra momenti calmi ed esplosioni distorte; con gli Aden fa il suo ingresso il vero punk, divertente, che ti cattura e ti fa muovere; con i Glitterball e la loro in a rain of rainbows il punk si trasferisce in discoteca; e con gli umbri Trans Vz non solo si porta il punk in discoteca, ma lo si porta anche indietro nel tempo, il risultato è una sorta di punk-newwave tutta da ascoltare. I Versailles con i Devo nel cuore (e un pò anche Ex Drummer) ci propongono la loro versione di Mongoloid; e ancora punk è con i Do Nascimiento, anche se per maggiore correttezza dovrei dire emocore; e poi c'è l'hardcore punk automobilistico del Controllo Elettronico della Velocità, tra citazioni di Jovanotti(!) e Sonic Youth; il doom-punk dei Gazebo Penguins a fare casino; l'indie-punk degli Hot Fetish Divas, dove Craig Nicholls si diverte con gli Arctic Monkeys; e il ritorno dell'emocore, con i Verme e la loro va tutto malone. Con i Maraiton si abbandona un pò il punk e ci si incazza, tra qualcosa di matematico, stop'n'go, due bassi e una batteria; ci pensa La Rivolta a portare di nuovo in scena il punk, anche se solo per poco, riuscendo a farci rimpiangere iMinistri del primo album; e punk, anche se acustico, è ashamed dei Jolly Jolly Doowhacker, vicini di casa dei Merci Miss Monroe; e cosa c'è di più adatto di un brano chiamato shut it up per chiudere una compilation? niente, ecco appunto. A farlo ci pensa il lebbroso Luke Lukas.

SJSF 2011 Photos

A series of pictures that Unsteady Freddie took over a four day span in Livorno Italy. June 16 2011 was at the Mercantino Americano which featured a Surf Jam Session and the band The Kilaueas. June 17, 18 and 19 2011 was the Surfer Joe Summer Festival 2011 held at Fortezza Vecchia.

Our SJSF 2011

Playing at the Surfer Joe Summer Festival for a surf band is the best thing that can ever happen. Especially for an Italian band, that fights every day, is simply amazing arriving there and discover many surf bands! After 5 hours of travel, we arrived at Fortezza Vecchia in Livorno. It seemed a film western scene! We were scared because a mexican guy could kill us in every moment! Instead hawaiian shirt, shorts and sunglasses were the uniforms when people started to came at the location.

Guitars, stands, reverbs, vinyls and vintage clothes were around us. At 6 o'clock we started with our soundcheck and at half past we started our set. We were very excited and Diego on the first "one, two, three, four" was really insecure but playing the first song he felt the atmosphere very amazing.

We are very happy because the present people appreciated our strange surf sound, a mix of western and fuzzy (dance in one moment!) attitude. After us on the stage: Los Fantasticos (UK), The Wavers (IT), Psycho Surfers (IT), The Space Rangers (ND). At 9 o'clock on the stage were Surfer Joe and His Boss Combo a really amazing Italian surf band. The headliners were The Bambi Molesters (CRO) actually one of the best instrumental surf band of world. One hour-set  that made people became crazy!
